16th Newtownabbey: (1) 1

2nd Newtownabbey: (1) 2

Saturday 21st October, Valley Lesiure Centre, Grass Pitch

Kick Off: 2.30pm

In the first half of this all Newtownabbey affair at the valley, both sides shared an even amount of posession and neither team capitalised on the chances that came there way. Kofi Opong and Dave Cavan controlled the midfield while David Moore and Graeme Dobbin were strong at the back in a 3-5-2 formation. Although could have been 3-0 either way at half time. The first goal came from the home team (16th) when the right winger was given more than enough space to whip in a dangerous cross through a crowd of defenders. A slighty hesitant Keith Dobbin should have claimed the ball but Graeme Dobbin was unfortunate to see the wet ball slip off his left foot and in for 1-0. After a few wasted chances from 2nd, they eventually forced a deserved equaliser after some neat play saw Peter Warke score from a good move. Half time 16th 1 2nd 1.

2nd Newtownabbey failed to find a rythmn in the 2nd half and the midfield found it hard to cope with the absence of Kofi who was taken off at H.T. All the midfield battles weren't really a contest, but Dave Cavan and Dave Ervine created a handful of chances at the other end with some nice touches but we failed to capitalise. Keith and Graeme Dobbin made up for their earlier mistake by dealing with the 16th frontline and keeping them at bay. David Moore also kept them quiet. He was then harshly adjudged to have pushed a player in the box and a penalty was given. Justice was done when the striker spooned it well wide. This was all after David Ervine had shown some lovely foot work inside the box and lobbed the keeper to score the winner. Dave Cavan's free kick from 30 yards flew narrowly wide while Graeme Dobbin tested the keeper with a powerful header from Dave Cavan's outswinging corner. The final five minutes saw persistant pressure from 16th but good defensive work made sure 2nd keft their 100% record intact.
