Hillsbourough in County Down is the home of the most historically important buildings in Ireland. The Anglican church dedicated to ST MALACHY, a prominent feature in the town, is acknowledged as the finest Irish example of 18th century gothic revival architecture. The current building – a restoration and enlargement of a previous church – was designed and built by WILL HILL, the first Marquis of Downshire. Its distinctive features include a bell tower and spire, rising to 210 feet. A Robinson & Son was commissioned to restore the church entrance. Requiring the highest standards of stone masonry, the restoration was completed using STANTON MOOR sandstone, sourced in YORKSHIRE. A combination of total attention to detail and the use of natural stone has brought this majestic building back to its full glory. |
