P.7 Project about the Building of the New School

In school the P.7 pupils did a project called the Industry Challenge. We visited the office of the architects of the new school, Kennedy & Fitzgerald.

Mr. Hanna showed us the models of different buildings. Then we went to the computer room where an image of our new school came up on the screen. You could zoom in and out so you could see different parts of the building.

We wrote about all the machines and what jobs they do and we wrote all the names of the people that were involved like the builder, the plumber and the surveyor and what jobs they did. We also wrote all the materials used to build the school like plastic, cement, brick and ceramics. We also did an investigation to see which mortar was the strongest at holding bricks together.

We started of by getting asked to do about all the different constructions on how to make the school. At first we found it hard, but once we got into the swing of it we were O.K. We started by picking parts of the school, I picked roofing, painting and finishing touches to write about. For the roof you had to make sure the slate was strong and the wood as well. For painting we had to look up a book on paint, pick the colour of paint, where to buy it from, what make and make sure it was Matt Emulsion.

After a while we were asked to go down and visit the artitect, we went in three groups of four. We saw the plans of the school on the computers and we used them to make a model of the new school.
