The Royal Black Institution

The "Royal" Black Institution, which is also commonly known as the Royal Black Preceptory, is looked upon by its members as the senior order within Orangeism. The Black Preceptory is looked upon by outsiders as "more religious" and "more dignified" than the Orange Order.

The Royal Black Preceptory consists of eleven degrees, as follows: -

(1) Royal Black Degree
(2) Royal Scarlet Degree
(3) Royal Mark Degree
(4) Apron and Royal Blue Degree
(5) Royal White Degree
(6) Royal Green Degree
(7) Gold Degree
(8) Star and Garter Degree
(9) Crimson Arrow Degree
(10) Link and Chain Degree
(11) Red Cross Degree

Obtaining any useful information on the Royal Black Institution is fraught with many difficulties due mainly to the fact it is a secret society which zealously guard its secrets and mysteries from the uninitiated. It is fair to say it has succeeded in guarding its practices, teaching and symbolism over the years where even Freemasonry has failed. Published material on the institution is therefore rare.

Whilst the Black Preceptory appears "more religious" and "more dignified" than the Orange Institution it is in fact a highly secretive ritualistic order. By its teaching and practices it is deeply unscriptural.
