The Feile boasts a packed programme, which includes events for all ages and blends cultural discussion with comedy, film, literature, music, exhibitions, drama, art, politics and sport. The festival's commitment to quality events has attracted leading names from all these fields to engage in performances, workshops and discussions in the city over the past six years. Previous guests include writers Ronan Bennett, Jimmy McGovern, Irene Welsh and James Kelman; comedians Mark Thomas and Kevin McAleer; musicians and DJ's such as Ash, Rare, Lionrock and Jonny Moy; and speakers Eamon McCann, Tim Pat Coogan, and Liz Curtis. The Feile offers many benefits to local people, encouraging community involvement and spirit of co-operation, providing an outlet for creative talents and improving the quality of life. By galvanising the widest possible range of community participation, the Feile becomes one of the brightest, most imaginative festivals in Derry, promoting a positive, energetic image and making a real impact on the city. Collaborations with cultural, arts and sporting bodies throughtout the city are an important part of the Feile programme, and have previously included work with the Nerve Centre, the Orchard Gallery, the playhouse, Conradh na Gaeilge and the local GAA. These partnerships will continue this year, with innovative new music projects taking place in association with Deep Fried Funk and Different Drums of Ireland. Since 1993, the Gasyard Wall Feile has grown from being a one-day/one venue festival, to extending its week-long programme of events into venues throughout the city. It has become an important fixture on the city's festival calendar and is now widely recognised as the largest and most successful community festival in the North West. The Gasyard Wall Feile 2000
will be a homecoming event, when the festival returns to its original
gasyard site. The site will house the new Gasworks Cultural Centre,
which will develop upon the established achievements of the Feile and
locate it in a wider context of ongoing cultural production. |
