Births, marriages and deaths are registered at the offices of the district councils. Birth and death registers are retained in the districts for just two years before being sent to the General Register Office (GRO). The District Registrars’ Offices keep sets of marriage registers only. They are the only source of pre-1922 marriage certificates.
