The most significant Hugenot settlement was established in Lisnagarvey (Lisburn) when,
following William III’s Bill to develop the linen trade in 1697, more than seventy families, led by Louis Crommelin, arrived in Lisburn, to escape persecution in their native France. Others arrived as officers and
privates in the army of King William of Orange. The registers of the Church of Ireland church in Lambeg and Christ Church Cathedral, Lisburn contain many Hugenot names. The main Hugenot registers were lost in the
mid-nineteenth century.
