Trade Directories

The following is a list of professional directories, copies of which are generally available in reference libraries.

Medical doctors

Croly’s Irish Medical Directory (1846) lists general practitioners and other medical graduates. This information is also available in the Medical Directory for Ireland, issued most years from 1852 to 1860 and in the Irish Medical Directory which appeared annually from 1872.

Clergymen

Catholic priests are listed in the Catholic Directory, Almanack and Registry, issued annually from 1836. It lists the clergy by diocese, giving an alphabetical list of parish priests (accompanied by their curates), the names of their parishes and the location of the various chapels with their post towns. There are also other listings of priests in various diocesan history journals and local history journals.

Church of Ireland ministers are listed in several publications:

  • Ecclesiastical Registry by Samuel Percy Lea (1814)- arranged by diocese, it lists the parishes and incumbents only, omitting the curates, and is indexed
  • Irish Ecclesiastical Register (issued in 1817, 1818, 1824 and 1827) - arranged by diocese, it lists both the incumbents and the curates, and is indexed
  • Ecclesiastical Register by John C. Erick (1830) - arranged by diocese and indexed, it shows each incumbent’s year of ordination, and names the curates
  • John Medlicott Bourns’ The Churchman’s Almanac and Irish Ecclesiastical Directory (1841) - arranged by diocese, it shows incumbents and curates and is indexed
  • Irish Ecclesiastical Directory (1841 and 1842) - arranged by diocese, it shows incumbents and curates, but is not indexed
  • The Irish Clergy List by John Medlicott Bourns (1843) - arraned by diocese, showing incumbents and curates and is indexed
  • Samuel B. Oldham’s Clerical Directory of Ireland (1858) - arranged by diocese, it shows incumbents and curates, and is indexed
  • James Charles’s Irish Church Directory (issued in 1862 and annually since then) - arranged by diocese, it shows patron, incumbent and curate, and is indexed. A section at the end of each volume shows the succession of bishops in each diocese, with dates of their episcopate, from the earliest known times.

Presbyterian church members are not well documented. Simm’s and McIntyre’s Belfast Almanack of 1837 gives a list of the members of the Presbyterian Synod of Ulster, showing the congregational address of the members. The only specific directory is William McComb’s Presbyterian Almanack of 1857 which gives an alphabetical list of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, showing the Presbytery, Congregation and post town of each of the members.
