The Harbour Lagoon, located within the Belfast Harbour Estate, was originally designed during the 1970s to hold the silt from the dredging operation to maintain the deep water channel into Belfast docks. When it was abandoned, it slowly filled with rainwater over several years, attracting birds and creating a spectacular new wetland habitat. Annually, more than 100 kinds of birds are recorded. For some species, notably black-tailed godwits commuting between Iceland and Ireland, the area has become famous - sometimes holding as many as 1000 godwits in autmn. |
