Larne
v Laurelvale - Sunday 29th June 2003
|
Larne followed this victory up with another good performance at home to Laurelvale on Sunday. The visitors won the toss and unsurprisingly chose to bat on another belter of a pitch, but a disciplined Larne bowling and fielding performance restricted them to just 164-8. Again the 2 Johnnys (Craig & McElhinney) bowled miserly opening spells but the breakthrough was not made until Du Toit was introduced. His first few overs were almost unplayable and brought him 2 wickets, and he was well supported by Gaw who bowled with great control and took 1-19 in his 10 overs. A partnership followed between Schelbusch and Pearson but runs were not coming quickly and the pressure told when McElhinney bowled Pearson for 17. Dean Hodge was now bowling very accurately at the end of the innings and was rewarded thanks to a stumping by Dempsey. The last over of the innings brought 3 wickets to Du Toit who finished with 5, the last of which was Schelbusch for a quality 82. On such a fine pitch, this total proved well short and Larne sailed past it for the loss of 4 wickets and with 13 overs to spare. Hodge opened the batting with Alexander who had just struck a sweet boundary before he ran himself out, and it was Hodge and Du Toit who took the game away from Laurelvale. Hodge was quick to dispatch anything overpitched, but he was overshadowed by Du Toit who delighted the spectators with an array of boundaries all round Sandy Bay. When fatigue got the better of Hodge for 31, a slight wobble followed as Du Toit and Tweed both fell (Du Toit's 72 came off just 61 balls and included 13 4s) but it was left to Aiston and Craig to guide Larne to victory, Aiston was content to give the strike to Craig who smashed 3 6s on his way to an unbeaten 39, giving Larne their 4th victory in the league. The match ball was kindly sponsored by The Cellars. Scorecard: Laurelvale 16-8 (J Schelbusch 82, C du Toit 5-24) Larne 166-4 (D. Hodge 31, C du Toit 72, J Craig 39*) Larne won by 6 wickets |
