Holywood v Larne - Sunday 18th July 2004

On Sunday, buoyed by their win against the league leaders, Larne travelled to Holywood to take on the bottom team and once again recorded a comfortable win, this time by 127 runs.

Skipper Trevor Dempsey won the toss and once more decided to bat first. Gareth Alexander (back in the team after scoring 47 for the seconds in their intermediate cup semi final triumph) and Griebenouw opened the innings and they set the pattern for the day with an opening stand of 149 (they had previously put on 154 for the first wicket against Cooke Collegians earlier in the season). Alexander was his usual controlled self whilst as usual Griebenouw was always looking impatient and trying to get after the bowling. This time it worked for him as none of the Holywood bowlers were able to contain him.

When Alexander had reached 39 he was bowled by Nixon but this didn’t stop Griebenouw as he marched towards his maiden hundred for the club. The last of his six sixes in his innings pushed him passed this landmark much to the appreciation of the Larne players and supporters. He was finally out in the 43 rd over with the score on 201 but the middle order of Aiston(29no), Craig(9), Tweed(22) and Dempsey(2 off one ball) took the score to 249 for 4 after the 50 overs.

After dismissing Muckamore for 118 the day before Larne felt very confident of defending this total and so it proved to be the case. Once again Greg Hill proved hard to score off and despite not picking up any wickets he bowled effectively in his 8 over spell. McClean went wicketless in his opening spell but would return later in the day to pick up two wickets, including the wicket of the dangerous Roux for 25.

Eddie Hunter (who had bowled so well for the seconds the day before taking 3-13) once again did not let his skipper down as he picked up two wickets for 16 in 6 overs. Jonathan Craig also picked up two wickets for 19 in 5 overs and it was left to Aiston and Gareth Gaw to finish the innings off as Gaw picked up 3 wickets for 2 runs in 3 overs.

These wins will probably ensure Larne’s status in Section 2 for another year. This weekend they play two more games as they travel to Armagh on Saturday and then travel to Derriaghy on Sunday to take on the new league leaders.

Scorecard:-

Larne 249-4 (G Alexander 39, D Griebenouw 112, A Roux 2-55)
Holywood 122 (M Shannon 34, R McClean 2-47, E Hunter 2-16, J Craig 2-19, G Gaw 3-2)

Larne won by 127 runs
