Armagh v Larne - Saturday 24th July 2004 |
|
Larne 1 st XI, who are sponsored by the Curran Court, travelled to Armagh on Saturday and came away with a nail biting 2 wicket win. Armagh won the toss and batted first scoring 186 in 49 overs. The main run scorers for Armagh were D Bullick who scored 51 and J Wright with 45. This pair put on a 3rd wicket partnership of 71 that saw the score reach 104 for 3 after in the 30 th over. In fact after 40 overs Armagh had reached 143 for 3 and a score of over 200 looked on the cards but excellent bowling from Robert McClean and Greg Hill slowed the scoring rate and both players picked up wickets with McClean finishing with 3 for 29 and Hill 2 for 45. Gareth Gaw only conceded 17 runs in his 10 overs bowling in the middle of the innings and when the last wickets fell – one to Craig and the other a run out – Armagh had scored 186. In reply Douglas Griebenouw smashed 25 runs off the first two overs but was then bowled in the 3 rd over. Gareth Alexander followed shortly after for 7 but Keith Aiston batted more sensibly and scored 35 before 3 quick wickets left Larne reeling at 85 for 5 in the 20 th over. Ian Hill and Graeme Leitch then steadied the ship with a solid partnership of 50 with both players looking in good form. Davy Bullick then turned the match around again with an inspired spell of bowling as he removed both Hill and Leitch and then picked up the wicket of Greg Hill to leave Larne struggling on 152 for 8 with 34 runs needed off 9 overs and only 2 wickets left. Skipper Trevor Dempsey and Gareth Gaw had other ideas and decided to counter attack as they plundered fours all round the ground and such was their domination of the bowling that the 34 runs required were scored in only 5 overs and it was Dempsey who hit the winning runs in the 46 th over to leave Larne winners by 2 wickets. Scorecard:- Armagh 186 all out (D Bullick 51, J Wright 45, R McClean 3-29, G Hill 2-45, K Aiston 2-52) Larne won by 2 wickets. |
