Larne v CIYMS - Saturday 14th August 2004

Larne 1st XI, who are sponsored by the Curran Court, entertained CIYMS at a warm Sandy Bay on Saturday and ended up winning by 8 wickets.

Larne’s skipper Jonathan Craig won the toss and elected to field first on a damp wicket. An excellent opening spell of bowling by Robert McClean and Greg Hill restricted the scoring rate of the CIYMS batsmen and although both bowlers failed to pick up a wicket they both performed very well. It wasn’t until Ian Hill was introduced that Larne made the breakthrough. He bowled McIlwaine and trapped Lucas LBW first ball. He picked up 2 more wickets and would finish with fine figures of 4-11.

Gareth Gaw also bowled at this time and in his 10 overs he didn’t pick up a wicket but only conceded 21 runs. Craig brought himself into the attack and in a fine spell of seam bowling picked up 3 for 18. by this stage CIYMS were battling to bat the 50 overs and when Greg Hill and McClean were re-introduced they finished off the remaining batsmen, picking up one wicket apiece.

In the Larne reply, once more Douglas Griebenouw was quickly into his stride and he totally dominated proceedings on his way to 79. In an innings that included 13 fours no CIYMS bowler got away lightly. At the other end Shah Ali Murad played one of his more sedate innings as he was content to let Griebenouw score the bulk of the runs.

When Griebenouw was out in the 15 th over the match was as good as over and despite the loss of Aiston for 5, Alan McKee on one not out and Murad who finished 18 not out saw Larne home with numerous overs to spare, Larne winning by 8 wickets.

Scorecard:-
CIYMS 116 (I Hill 4-11, J Craig 3-18)
Larne 117-2 (D Griebenouw 79, S Murad 18no)
Larne won by 8 wickets.
