Derriaghy v Larne - Monday 3rd May 2004

On Mayday Monday, Larne Second XI, sponsored by The Kiln, beat Derriaghy II by 8 wickets in League Division 2 Section 2.

For the third time in a row, Larne’s skipper won the toss and had no hesitation in asking the home team to bat. Johnny McIlhenny and Eddie Hunter opened the bowling and shared a wicket a-piece in their opening spells. Jonathon King and Darren Stanton were brought on in a double change that quickly saw the third wicket of the day fall to King.

However, at this stage Derriaghy re-grouped and were building a dangerous fourth wicket stand when Ken McKinley made the breakthrough bowling the dangerous Stanton and Gill in the space of 3 overs. Darren Stanton followed up with a run-out and 2 wickets in last over to have Derriaghy reeling at 102 for 8. Unfortunately some late order hitting saw the total reach a more respectable 137 before King returned with his off-spinners to claim the final 2 wickets.

New opening pair Eddie Hunter and Neil Hodge started the chase cautiously but their sensible approach allowed Larne to reach the drinks without any alarms and a solid 62 on the board. Although both departed shortly after drinks, for identical scores of 29, the platform had been established to allow Alan McKee and Ryan Hamill to play freely and quickly knock off the remaining 70 runs. A commanding McKee stroked an effortless 41no with Hamill undefeated on 20.

On Saturday the Seconds travel to Ards for the first round of the Intermediate Cup.
