Larne v Laurelvale - Sunday 25th July 2004 |
On Sunday 25 th July, Larne Second XI, sponsored by Beattie, Marcus & Co., beat Laurelvale II by 5 wickets in League Division 2 Section 2. Although Laurelvale are Larne’s Intermediate Cup Final opponents, this fixture proved meaningless as a dress rehearsal as Laurelvale turned up with 6 Under 15’s in their side. To avoid a long day in the field they opted to bat first and posted a total of 115. Dean Hodge was his usual accurate self and was well supported early on by Jonathon King. However, it was Jonathon’s younger brother Darren King who proved the star of the show for Larne, as he claimed 5 for 14, in his maiden bowling performance for the Seconds. Johnny Baxter bowled his off spinners to great effect for figures of 3 for 29 and was particularly unlucky as several other half chances were missed. Ryan Hamill was the other bowler used and he did enough to get another chance as he claimed a wicket and had another easy chance put down. 115 was never going to be enough and both teams knew it, so the Larne innings had a practice match feel to it. Unfortunately several of Larne’s batsmen played like they do in practice and 5 wickets went down before the game was finished in the 27 th over. Top scorers were Shah Murad with 36 and Alan McKee with 39. Dean Hodge and Ryan Hamill finished on 15no and 12no respectively.
