Dunmurry v Larne - Sunday 15th August 2004 |
|
On Sunday 15th August, Larne Second XI, sponsored by Larne Harbour Co., lost to Dunmurry II by 28 runs in League Division 2 Section 2. After sneaking home against Laurelvale on Saturday, a strong Larne side travelled to Dunmurry in confident mood for another away win. Larne bowled first and were reasonably happy to restrict Dunmurry to a total of 148 although as is becoming a habit it was the inability to take the final 2 wickets that allowed Dunmurry to almost hit 150. 8 wickets were down with only 100 on the board. Pick of the bowlers were Jonathon King and Johnny Baxter with 3 wickets each, although Eddie Hunter and Dean Hodge both bowled excellent spells. Special mention must go to Brian Spence for a superb diving catch for Baxter’s first wicket. With a strong batting line-up 148 didn’t look a big target but some accurate bowling with the new ball restricted Larne to just 20 off the first 10 overs. Alexander then played on looking to force the scoring rate and was followed shortly afterwards by McKee. Baxter and Spence then took the score up to 50 before Baxter mis-timed a pull to mid-on. Tweed followed within 3 balls and Hamill was then run-out attempting a second run off a missed before Spence’s luck ran out and he was caught in the deep for 38. Hodge however looked in excellent form and represented a real chance for a win if somebody could stay with him. Moore survived an easy chance off the first ball but was yorked several overs later and Stanton was also bowled as the ball kept low. With only 2 batsmen left Hodge had to take chances and an excellent knock of 29 was ended with a great catch at long off. King was run-out with a direct hit to leave Larne almost 30 runs short. In summary it was one of the worst batting efforts in recent seasons proving that it doesn’t only happen in Cup Finals. Scorecard:- |
