Lurgan v Larne - Saturday 22nd May 2004

A very in-experienced Larne third XI went down to Lurgan's third string away at Monbrief Lurgan on Saturday.  The result could have been different, however, and one thing the young lads learned was that you cannot do anything about either the weird interpretation of the lbw law from the home umpires and that catches win matches.  The latter was critical, since seven catches were dropped in the Lurgan innings, when they were chasing Larne's total of 160-5 in 40 overs.  The mainstay of this total was a stubborn 38, by opener and vice - Captain Scott Allan and the veteran of the team Tony Anderson, who rolled back the years, with a splendid innings of 57 not out, which he then followed up with a fine bowling display snaring two wickets.  The other main contributor to the Larne score was Willie Graham with 23.

The dropped catches proved vital and left arm spinner Michael Walker, was particularly unfortunate to have a number of catches dropped, in a fine display of spin bowling.  The three teenagers in the bowling department and all called King bowled very well.  Darren King collected two wickets and had another caught off a no ball, while brothers Andrew (14) and Simon (13), impressed all with their efforts.  John Graham and Eddie Wilson also strove tirelessly in the field, with many an excellent stop.

This was a first outing for this very young and in-experienced team, but the display of the youngsters augurs well, and hopefully their first win, will be just around the corner, since the talent is certainly there.
