This is one of set of photographs of the fair taken in the 1880s. They were discovered in Lancashire by Andrew Gill who collects and shows Victorian Lantern Slides. We are grateful to him for allowing us see what life was like in the late Nineteenth Century in our area. A group of farmers and barefoot boys have gathered at the bottom of the Square to watch some entertainers.

At a time when the working day was from dawn to dusk the May Fair day was the only break in the year when they could enjoy some simple fun.
