Captain's Notes - 2001

Once again it is with great pleasure that I take on the honourable task of Captain of the 2nd XI of North of Ireland Cricket Club. I am priveleged and perhaps a little daunted that I am Captaining the team in what is to be the final year at H.Q.; Ormeau.

The 2000 season was a mixed one for the seconds with a very poor start but an extremely strong second half. We were knocked out of the Junior cup in the first round by Civil Service and out of the first 9 league games had recorded only 3 wins. A lot of the poor performances can be put down to the constant unavailability of players which meant there was never the same side going out week after week.

In the second half of the season there was a much more settled side and this was reflected in the results with 7 wins out of the last 8 league matches. The final league result was 17 games played out of a possible 18 with 10 wins and 7 defeats. This left the seconds finishing in joint 3rd position with Cliftonville; Warinsgtown in second position and Instonians the champions. I suppose if I were looking for a new Year's wish then it would be that players of all levels could make themselves available more consistently throughout the season. This I feel contributed strongly to our success in the latter part of the season. I would however also like to publicly thank all of the 'stalwarts' who do turn out week-in, week-out without fail. Again may I take the opportunity to thank the sponsors and all non playing office bearers of the club. Their unfailing support is as always very much appreciated by all those involved with cricket in the club. I would also ask that all players, officials, members, supporters and visitors make 2001 a very special 'Final' year at Ormeau. Good luck to all who participate !
