East Belfast Traders' Association

United we stand... and with more 'clout'

For many of us the past few years have been difficult enough as several large supermarkets and out-of-town shopping centres appeared on the scene. Nevertheless, the small trader is holding his (or her) own, and not allowing 'our' trade to disappear easily.

To this end it is important that we have a strong Association, and I would urge you to support it. If we unite as a group we gain in strength and have more clout.

We have recently appointed a new Development Officer in David Seaton, and I know he is anxious to positively assist in every way he can. David has several ideas for the good of the Association -- some of which have already been put in place -- so please let him have your thoughts or comments on any related traders' matters.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Peaceful New Year -- and please remember, membership in our Association is FREE.

Opportunities to be exploited

I have recently been appointed Business Development Officer for the Association. The first few weeks in the post have indicated to me just how interesting, diverse and challenging the job is. I realise that currently the trading climate for you can be difficult, but there are also opportunities which can be exploited.

I look forward to us working together for the good of the small business community in East Belfast. In my short time in office I have met quite a few of you, and I look forward to meeting many more in the near future.

In the meantime, do not hesitate to contact me. May we all have a Prosperous and Profitable Year 2000.

David Seaton, Business Development Officer

Watch that bus!

We are bringing the 'Shop Local, Buy Local' advertising campaign to the public in East Belfast via a Citybus initiative. Thirty-six buses travelling on all arterial routes in East Belfast will be carrying our slogan both inside and outside the vehicle. The idea is to encourage the public to shop locally, keep the money circulating in the area, and maintain and create jobs on our doorstep.

Households targetted

Approximately 8000 special Community Shopper leaflets have been distributed to households in East Belfast. The Traders' Association is working in conjunction with Ray Kennedy PR Company to promote local businesses. The fee for these adverts is modest, so if you want to be included in future issues contact Ray Kennedy at Belfast 402541.

Spruce up for the Arches area

We should shortly see the area around Holywood Arches spruced up. The Department of the Environment, through Making Belfast Work, have agreed that grant aid from the European Regional Development Fund is available to help regenerate the area between the Arches and the Albertbridge / Newtownards Road junction. Traders will be working closely with the above agencies, plus the Greater East Belfast Partnership, and will keep you updated on progress as and when things start to happen.

Strandtown lights up

The switching on of the Strandtown Village lights was performed by UTV's Julian Simmons on Thursday, 25th November. A pipe band, street performers and free giveaways by the local traders all added to the party atmosphere on the Belmont Road. Maybe next year other areas will undertake a similar venture...
